Education Programming

Inlet Dance Theatre's education programs are a core component of our mission. Inlet's varied education programs employ the four creative practices of imagination, investigation, construction, and reflection and nurture the effective work habits of curiosity, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, communication, and collaboration—each of which transfer to all aspects of learning and life in the 21st Century. Care is taken to ensure a warm and empathic learning environment as we engage our students in the various skills needed in our art making process. The evidence of how Inlet is "using dance to further people" is demonstrated not only by the increased knowledge and skills of our students but also when they translate dance lessons into life lessons.

Inlet Dance Theatre has two major streams of education programming:  Inflow (come to Inlet) and Outflow (Inlet outreach).

Come to Inlet

Inlet Dance Theatre fosters a year-round educational environment where students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels come to us for instruction.

Inlet Trainee & Apprentice Program

The fee-based Inlet Trainee & Apprentice Program is for individuals who are serious about dancing professionally or for preparing to obtain an undergraduate degree in dance. The purpose of the program is to prepare young adults for auditions for professional companies or entrance into a college dance program.  Prospective students must have completed high school and/or college course work.

Beginning every June, Inlet Dance Theatre hosts a fee-based modern dance instructional camp for dance students. SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE is an aggressive six-week summer camp for ages 12 though adult and includes curriculum such as modern dance technique, nontraditional partnering, improvisation, composition and performance. The camp annually culminates with free public performances at Cain Park's Evans Ampitheater in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Inlet Outreach Initiatives

Inlet Dance Theatre expands the reach of its education programs by traveling out into communities.  Often times, local schools and/or civic arts organizations will invite Inlet to their town to offer community programs, residencies or assembly performances.  Inlet has an extensive list of communities that we have partnered with in addition to connections we’ve made through our affiliation with the Ohio Arts Council.

Community Programs

Inlet Dance Theatre collaborates with communities to design and implement programs that engage local residents in the dance making process, and usually culminate with a performance in a community space. For example, Inlet worked with community members in Chagrin Falls (OH) in a series of workshops to create masks, costuming, and puppets. Inlet then conducted movement workshops and culminated the experience by creating an award winning section in the annual Blossom Time Parade.

Program includes:

Planning phase: Inlet and key community members collaborate to discover the scope and vision for the overall project.
Implementation phase: Inlet works with the selected core group from the community teaching movement and other workshops focused on the culminating event.
Culminating performance: Members of the selected core group perform, often with members of Inlet Dance Theatre, in a culminating public performance.
Evaluation phase: Inlet meets with key community members to assess the process and final performance piece, to collect feedback from community members, and to collate media coverage.

Inlet Dance Theatre conducts residencies in schools, through community arts organizations, and in communities.  Inlet residencies allow a diverse range of students to dive into the dance making process, regardless of their previous dance experience.  Inlet residencies link with national and state dance and academic standards while engaging students in the creative thinking process in an empathic environment.

Inlet Dance Theatre is on the Ohio Arts Council’s roster for the Artist in Residence Program.  This program provides an avenue of funding for schools, arts organizations and communities.
